Top reasons as to why you should study early childhood education
Early childhood education is an important and impactful career. You might have a passion for working with children but be unsure if teaching is the right career for you. Asking “why” is a critical question to ask as you consider your future and the right career path for you.
A career in early childhood education is a rewarding field where you can make a difference. Most people will choose early childhood education because of the personal reward and satisfaction of helping young children. Early childhood educators have an opportunity to make a difference in the young population They get to put children on the right path, teach students things that the children will carry for the rest of their lives, and help children explore and succeed. Early childhood educators get to watch children grow. The younger years of a child are some of the most critical in a person’s life.
Early childhood education is a hands-on and creative career path. A usual classroom in this field is overflowing with creativity and inspiration though colour, art, and learning materials. Early childhood educators are usually involved in the creative happenings throughout the classroom. There is a good chance that you will create class curriculum as part of your role. Early childhood educators have the benefit of working alongside children in a stimulating environment.
The career outlook is bright and there will always be a need for education. Early childhood education is an in-demand career always with opportunities available. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, preschool teachers can expect 10% growth in employment, kindergarten teachers can expect an 8% rise in job opportunities by 2026, over 84,000 jobs will become available for childcare workers, and preschool and childcare center directors can expect employment to grow 11% over the next few years. There is strong job security and the chance of advancement in the early childhood education field.
There are many different job options in the early childhood education field. There is an array of opportunities for individuals who are starting out. If you choose a career in early childhood education, that does not mean that you are choosing a single career as a preschool or daycare teacher. The field stretched far beyond that. You can pursue careers such as:
- school teacher or assistant teacher;
- infant, toddler, or preschool teacher;
- early childhood educator;
- curriculum coordinator;
- family resource worker; and
- early childhood director.
Please note that some careers may require an additional certificate.
To become an early childhood educator, you must have a postsecondary diploma or degree in a related field such as ECE. An additional certificate such as Infant and Toddler or Montessori may be required. Most programs now give First Aid and CPR and Food Safe Level 1 certificates to students in the program as part of the curriculum.
A great early childhood educator should be patient, kind, understanding, have good communication, have a sense of humor, and be creative, to name a few.
